Medicare beneficiaries may receive ambulatory care services in different settings, including independent physician offices (IPOs), hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs), emergency departments (EDs), and – for surgical services – ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs). Our findings suggest higher needs for patients treated in HOPDs as compared to other settings, because of SDOH and higher clinical complexity.
